Computers for Education
Currently in Vietnam there are approximately 54.7 million Internet users. This number is forecast to reach 75.7 million by 2023 (Statista 2018). The sharing of information and knowledge online makes the Internet one of the richest sources of learning for students and schools. Computer literacy and online skills are therefore essential for education, however, not every student in Vietnam has an equal chance to access these resources.
In the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam and border regions isolated by waterways, large portions of the population live with high levels of poverty, struggling to make ends meet. Many primary schools are under-resourced and access to the internet at home is impossible.
“Computers for Education” aims to support disadvantaged students living in these communities and local teachers who utilise online resources for their teaching. The project helps to provide early access to information technology education and resources, offering younger students in particular a solid foundation so they can move on to further education.
A donation of $400 supplies a computer for learning in schools. $12,000 – $20,000 funds an entire Computer Room.
Generous support from project partners has so far enabled 19 computer rooms to be built and fully equipped in these Mekong communities, and 12,000 students trained on computer skills since the project commenced.
