Books for Education
“A child who reads will be an adult who thinks”
– Sasha Salmina –
When considering early childhood and primary education as the strongest foundation for future development, we understand the important role of books at this stage in a child’s life. To establish good reading habits, improve language and thinking skills and to inspire a creative imagination, books prove to be an indispensable friend. For those who have limited access to other online information resources, books become even more essential to their education, particularly for self-directed learning.
Loreto Vietnam endeavours to create a path to the world of knowledge and imagination for children through the provision of ‘friendly libraries’, because “a book, too, can be a star, a living fire to lighten the darkness leading out into the expanding universe” – Madeleine L’Engle.
A ‘friendly library’ with good titles, adequate light and a spacious area to welcome readers, helps to encourage reading.
A donation of $6000 – $8000 can equip an entire friendly library in a rural community.
Since the “Books for Education” program commenced, 26 school libraries have been built and equipped, and 15,000 students now participate in reading clubs and other book sharing activities.
