An Giang Province lies in the Mekong Delta in the southwestern part of Vietnam sharing a 95 kilometer border with Cambodia in the north west. The main ethnic groups found in the province are the Kinh, Khmer, Cham, and Hoa. An Giang is crisscrossed bymany rivers and canals which make a convenient water transport system. The two tributaries of the Mekong river, the Tien and the Hau, run across the Province. They deliver millions of cubic meters of alluvium annually to the region. As a result, the deposits have formed several islets which are extremely fertile and covered with lush green vegetation. An Giang has long been famous for its traditional occupation of mulberry growing, silkworm raising and silk weaving.

An Phu District in An Giang Province is one of the most remote places in Vietnam. Most of An Phu District is a plain. Every year it is affected by the flooding season. Between 6 months each year, rising levels in the Mekong River from high rainfall means an average rise from 2- 3 meters. The time of flooding is typically prolonged having a major impact on practices and production of people’s labors. The location of An Phu District is quite favorable. It is an important location from Cambodia into Vietnam, connected by river/road and connecting the western coastal Hau River region in Vietnam with the capital Phnom Penh of Cambodia. Residents of An Phú District are mainly farmers: most of the area is under rice cultivation with alluvium soil and freshwater which also allows much fishing.
